Jewish Immigrant Farmers in Eastern Connecticut
A program will be held about Jewish families who settled in towns in Eastern Connecticut towns such as Columbia, Hebron, Lebanon and Colchester on Sunday September 14, from 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm. The program will begin at Columbia’s Saxon B. Little Library’s program room with the showing of a documentary film, Harvesting Stones. The film shows how, with the support of Jewish organizations and philanthropists, these immigrants were able to escape persecution in Russia and Eastern Europe, travel to America, establish farms and even build synagogues where they could practice their religion and socialize.
The documentary features interviews with the children and grandchildren of the original settlers and includes historical footage. After the 75-minute film, program participants will jump back into their cars in order to visit the synagogues in both Columbia and Hebron, spending about 20 minutes at each site.
The program is free and there is no registration required.
